Due to the long wheelbase and the flat geometry of the main tank, this area is extremely exposed when cresting hills, during extreme articulation, or when carelessly bottoming out on sharp rocks and hidden tree stumps. A localized impact off-road can easily deform or tear the original, thin-walled factory protection or the tank itself – resulting in a fatal loss of fuel in the middle of nowhere.
